Village Alliance Honors Public Safety Ambassador Calvin Beatty at 31st Annual Meeting

On Tuesday, October 15, the Village Alliance held our 31st Annual Meeting at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater. During the meeting, we proudly honored the supervisor of our Public Safety Ambassador program Calvin Beatty with the Norman Buchbinder Award for his incredible work in the last year. The Buchbinder Award is presented to individuals who have made an outsized impact in the Greenwich Village community.

Over the past year, the Village Alliance has made significant strides in addressing the needs of our businesses, particularly those regarding ongoing quality-of-life challenges. The mental health and addiction crisis has created difficult conditions for many small retailers and cafés along our commercial corridors.

As part of our response, we launched our Public Safety Partnership Program which, under Calvin’s supervision, has helped strengthen relationships between our public safety ambassadors and local businesses. The program tracks daily interactions, enhances communication, and provides tailored support to retailers.

Calvin’s tireless work to support our district’s businesses isn’t just appreciated by the team at the Village Alliance. His daily interactions with the staff and business owners of the Village have left a significant impact on those he helps:

“Calvin has been such a big help with everything. He really brings peace. He’s always coming with a smile and the patience of a saint. He’s always just ready to help with whatever we need. It’s really refreshing—we feel safe.”

—Tatiana, works at See’s Candies on West 8th St.

“Calvin is amazing. We’ve had multiple situations out here, and he already knew about it before I did. He was on top of it. Whenever he’s around, I feel so safe and taken care of. I love seeing him walk by, I love when he comes in and talks to us. He’s really on top of it, and I try to let him know he’s doing the lord’s work. . . thank you Calvin for all that you do.”

—Gabby, works at Goods For The Study on West 8th St.

The outsized impact of Calvin’s work is felt throughout the Village. For this reason, it’s our privilege to honor him with this year’s Buchbinder Award.
