Did you know that the famous children’s story Madeline about a young girl in Paris wasn’t written by a Frenchmen or in France? Author Ludwig Bemelmans was born in Austria-Hungary and moved to New York in the early 20th Century. Bemelmans became an avid drawer, decorating every surface he could find including his blinds. In the 1930s a publisher met him here, at his studio, and convinced him to write children’s books.
