Edgar Allan Poe Residence

85 W. 3rd Street

The Venue

Prior to moving to the Bronx with his wife and mother-in-law, Edgar Allan Poe lived here. Known for his macabre poems and short stories, he revised and published “The Raven” at this address. The original Poe residence was dismantled in 2001 with the construction of NYU’s Furman Hall. An agreement was ultimately reached between preservationists and the university, however, to ensure the façade resembled how the building looked in 1845. A room in Furman Hall is dedicated to Poe and available through NYU for readings and lectures.
