FOR THE PEOPLE: AN EVENING WITH MAHOGANY L. BROWNE, KIESE LAYMON, IMANI PERRY, PATRICIA SMITH, AND TYRIEK WHITE

Black writers and artists have immeasurably shaped American literature and culture. Eruptions of Black creativity like The Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement built community across artistic disciplines. Today’s leading Black novelists, poets, and historians resurrect voices obscured by time, reckon with loss, grief, love and other familial inheritances, and envision new futures. As Gwendolyn Brooks writes, “we are each other’s harvest; we are each other’s business; we are each other’s magnitude and bond.”  Mahogany L. Browne, (Chrome Valley: Poems), Kiese Laymon (How to Slowly Kill Yourselves and Others in America), Imani Perry (South to America), Patricia Smith (Unshuttered: Poems) and Tyriek White (A Haunting) come together for a series of discussions, readings, and musical performances that explore the intersection of art, history, and family in the Black literary tradition.
