The first amendment of the US Bill of Rights assures freedom of speech, the press, and to peacefully assemble (re: protest) about issues of the day.  WSP’s History of Protest Tour describes some of the demonstrations occurring in Washington Square Park over the last two centuries. The advocates of the 19th and 20th centuries raised their voices over issues that we still face today: economic and racial inequities, immigration, exploitation of labor and preservation of public space. Through the stories of four historic protests that resulted in significant policy changes we’ll explore the ways in which this public space has served as a platform for the “greater good” and consider their relation to recent protests occurring within Washington Square Park.
