Max Roach at 100: Communal Ancestral Listening Session with Michael Mwenso
THE NEW SCHOOL
From The New School;
In this joyful and immersive gathering as part of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, musician and educator Michael Mwenso will guide attendees through a communal exploration of recorded music – with a focus on the indelible offerings of Max Roach – in celebration of the Max Roach centennial this year.
In his Communal Ancestral Listening Sessions, Michael creates a sense of community and connection by playing recordings of musical forebears who propelled the advancement of the human condition – prompting listeners to voluntarily share what they feel and hear. For this special event, we invite you to connect through the healing, love, and uplift that’s embedded in Black roots music. You will be invited to explore how Black roots music embodies the Black experience – holding the spirit and memory of a people who weave together traditions of the African diaspora. This timely session will provide an engaging, communal, deep dive into Max Roach’s music and its importance within the fabric of our culture. Join us!
Event is located in the Jazz Performance Space at The New School Arnhold Hall.
