Meet the Mosaic Man!
The 'Mosaic Man', Jim Power spent 30 years bringing East Village walls and lamp posts to life with his mosaic art, crafting the beloved East Village 'Mosaic Trail'. Using tiny pieces of ceramic, tile and other locally sourced materials he created mosaic designs telling the neighborhood's story of rich history, art, grit and passion. The Mosaic Man has recently come out of retirement to lovingly restore seven of the badly damaged light poles that were removed from Astor Place during the redevelopment of the area.
Now you can meet the Mosaic Man and talk with him one on one about how he created one of New York’s most iconic prices of large scale public art. You’ll also be able to watch him hard at work creating his mosaics and see for yourself the intricacy and fine detail of his work. He’ll be working on small mosaic panels and also creating mosaic belt buckles all day in TD Bank!
Meet the Mosaic Man on Friday August, 12th at TD Bank , 80 University Place between East 1th and East 12th Street where you’ll also be able learn how TD Bank are generously supporting our campaign to raise additional funds to help complete the restoration of the Astor Place mosaic light poles.
Through 2016 the Village Alliance, City Lore and several community activists have funded the restoration of badly damaged mosaic poles, with four poles still be restored funding has been exhausted, so we've teamed up with the Mosaic Man, TD Bank along with others to raise $20,000 to help him continue his restoration work and ensure that these important pieces of art can return to their home for the next generation to enjoy.
Help us and the Mosaic Man complete his work by contributing to the restoration project on our Generosity crowd funding page, absolutely any contribution would be immensely appreciated. You’ll also be able to make an in person donation to the restoration project on August 12th at TD Bank at 80 University Place.
