Congratulations to Murray's Bagels on being awarded the prestigious Norman Buchbinder Award.
The award was announced at last nights annual meeting of the Village Alliance. The Norman Buchbinder Award is presented annually to the Greenwich Village property or business owner that most embodies the pride in community and robust attention to neighborhood character that was the hallmark of Mr. Buchbinder, founding President of the Village Alliance.
The 2019 award honors Murray's Bagels, a Greenwich Village favorite which has operated at 500 Sixth Avenue for over 20 years.
Owner, Adam Pomerantz, opened Murray’s Bagels in 1996, fulfilling his dream to run a businesses that not only sold the finest traditional bagels, but also appetizing fare like lox, sable, whitefish and other salads that he remembered fondly from his childhood (Adam’s father, Murray, used to bring home Adam’s favorite Jewish dishes from the Lower East Side every week).
After apprenticing for a wholesale bagel baker in New Jersey and sampling recipes from all over the city, Adam finally found the perfect storefront in Greenwich Village to offer his delicious food.
Since opening, Murray's Bagels has consistently served as a daytime dining destination and impromptu community center for our little corner of the city. Now a Village mainstay, Adam Pomerantz’s dedication to his dream business and its place in the hearts of surrounding community are reminiscent of Mr. Buchbinder, and we enthusiastically honor Murray’s Bagels this year with the 2019 Buchbinder Award.
