Lafayette Water Main Project Comes to a Close

The construction around Cooper Square and Lafayette St. will finally come to a close this winter as the city announces the completion of this major capital project. The reconstruction and replacement of essential Third Water Tunnel infrastructure beneath the road surface was the main goal of the project, although sewers, hydrants, and sidewalks were also tended to.

Some highlights of the work include:

  • Over 3,000 feet of new water mains installed

  • The replacement of the old vrick sewer system

  • 50,000 square feet of new sidewalk

  • 34 new fire hydrants

  • Updated gas and electric infrastructure

  • 7 new sewer manholes

  • The installation of new pedestrian markings, crossings and bike lanes
