NYC Pride 2012: Get the Lowdown

The Village is one of the world’s most famous gayborhoods. Steeped in LGBT history and packed with fun, it definitely knows how to celebrate Pride.

As the drinks pour and the sun heats up, however, the festivities can get frustratingly messy. Here are some tips to make the most of the parades and parties of NYC Pride 2012:

1.      For the parade: Stake out a spot early. Thousands will line Fifth Avenue and Christopher Street to see the spectacle and civil rights march that’s been occurring since 1970. The prime spot will be right here in the Village district at 8th Street and 5th Avenue where the parade participants will be reviewed for awards. Don’t miss 2012 Grand Marshal Cyndi Lauper getting the crowds revved up.

2.      Know before you go. Police barricades preventing pedestrian traffic, insane cover charges, and sold out events are all reasons to know what to attend before the weekend even starts. In other words: save the spontaneity for the dance floor. This is especially true of signature Pride events like the Rapture on the River and Dance on the Pier. They generally sell out fast, so get your tickets in advance.

3.      Drink water. Day drinking is encouraged, dehydration is not. Stock up at any of the Village’s convenient delis and grocery stores.

4.      Get clued in. Pride, especially in the Village, is about having a good time and being yourself. Historically though, it’s about civil rights. Check out NYC Pride’s swanky new Heritage of Pride historical time line to know the reason for the season. While you’re there NYC Pride’s website will also direct you to all the event details for the weekend.

Happy Pride everyone! Have a great weekend in the Village.
