Barney’s Hardware

The Venue

Since 1963, this hardware store has proven it knows how to make the most of minimal space. The narrow, two-aisled space contains about 2 million items. Filled right up to the pressed-tin ceiling, the shelves hold everything from masking tape to window weather seal. There are four shelves devoted just to rope and twine—plus tools, paints, and nails galore. The store caters to professionals—plumbers, electricians, and painters—with attentive personal service, while also attracting homeowners from the neighborhood with handy kitchen supplies such as wine openers, graters, canning jars, and basic household items like candles, light bulbs, and drain catchers.
