Hao Noodle & Tea

Hao Noodle and Tea features a serene and intimate environment complemented by heavenly, housemade noodles and authentic Chinese recipes steeped by thousands of years of tradition.

In the Chinese language, “Hao” (好) means “Great”. Moreover, “Hao” (好) also symbolizes the strive for perfection. In the culinary world, “Hao” (好) proclaims a constant devotion to authenticity and quality. Thus, achieving “Hao”, is their restaurant’s mission.

In Chinese culture, its believed that days of joy and moments of happiness should be celebrated with great food, as an appreciation of food is the most intimate connection. With that in mind, and an extensive lunch and dinner menu, it is one of New York City's finest Chinese restaurants in which to celebrate New Year.

South of the Clouds

16 West 8th Street

Village newcomer South of the Clouds has recently opened to glittering reviews from the New York Times, New York Magazine, Eater and many more. The menu primarily features classic Yunnan Rice Noodle in a modern setting.

They also have the sweetest story on their menu, it goes like this...Once upon a time, there was a scholar who was studying hard for his imperial exams on a small island of Yunnan. The scholar's wife brought him soup every day, but by the time she crossed the bridge it was cold. Then she started spooning a layer of oil on top that would act as insulation and keep the broth warm, and carrying the other ingredients separately so they wouldn't get soggy.

The husband ate this everyday and eventually, the scholar succeeded in passing the imperial exams and remembering his wife's great kindness and hospitality. Great honor and satisfaction was brought to the village. The End.

25 West 8th Street

Rasa features a Malaysian-inspired menu as well as dishes influenced by the rich culinary heritage of South East Asia. It's head chef, Tommy Lai, is the first-ever Malaysian toque to earn a Michelin star in New York.

Rasa is named after a small village one hour north of Kuala Lumpur where siblings Tommy Lai and Camie Lai grew up in an impoverished environment. Showered with love and affection by their parents, they learned their mothers legendary Malaysian street food, or “choo-char” recipes in the village whose name also means taste in Malay. Today in a different Village many thousands of miles from Rasa, culturally and in distance, Tommy & Camie continue to create some of the best Malaysian food in New York City, staying true to the “choo-char” techniques their mother taught them in Rasa.

Sammy's Nooodle Shop & Grill

455 Sixth Avenue (Btwn. West 10th & 11th)

If you're look for authentic and different Chinese this frenetic favorite of Village locals will not dissapoint! Featuring a menu that is anything but mainstream, the restaurant specializes in hearty Chinese soups and broths. 

Brawny noodle soups in giant steaming bowls are the draw, lacking MSG, the bracing broths come mercifully free of the oleaginous layer native to New York takeout but loaded with crisp greens, sloppy noodles and firm meats. If trawling through dense soup sounds too labor-intensive, Cantonese sliced roasted meats, the other house specialty, makes a great alternative.

The Bao

This chic St. Marks favorite is  known for Shanghai-style xiao long bao soup dumplings with classic and creative fillings. This Manhattan outpost of its Flushing sister, created by Richard Lam, is best known for the "xiao long bao" (wobbly, popping dumplings) and it's array of hearty broths. Try the Xihu Beef Bisque!
